Blue Buckets Signal a Sign of Spring

CTE Month Kicks off With Maple Tree Tapping
Posted on 02/06/2023
It's #CTEmonth! It's also the perfect time for the  Narragansett FFA's a nnual tree tapping.

If you've noticed the blue buckets all over town, it's because each year in early February, students trek out to begin the tapping process, which is installing them on maple trees in surrounding areas.

It's not unlikely to pass dozens of these on the familiar roads around our schools that residents travel on every day and serves as a welcome sign of Spring.

Next month, students will begin collecting these buckets full of the sap that has been gathered and then prepares for production by testing the sugar content using a hydrometer. They continue to boil the liquid down for hands on learning through the entire process and how to safely complete it for consumption.

In Late March, students then hand-bottle and label the syrup, which will be available for purchase in the Spring to support the program at the school, at school-based events, at the Rhode Island Home Show when the students have the opportunity to attend, and shared with staff as a thank you for their support.

This also coincides with Fresh Egg Fridays, which offers farm-fresh eggs from our own Hen House, which is cared for by our students.

Just another example of how passionate and engaging our students are, especially through the programs offered here at NHS.
