Narragansett High School Teacher Named 2026 Civic Education Teacher of the Year

Narragansett High School social studies teacher Kathryn “Katie” Jones has been named a 2026 Rhode Island Civic Education Teacher of the Year by the Rhode Island Department of State. She was honored at a ceremony at the Rhode Island State House on March 9, where Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore recognized her alongside fellow recipient Amarís García of Trinity Academy for the Performing Arts.

The Civic Education Teacher of the Year award recognizes educators who demonstrate exceptional commitment and expertise in teaching civics or American government, with an emphasis on innovative instruction and experiential learning that encourages students to actively engage in civic life.

Now in her twelfth year of teaching, Jones teaches Civics, AP Psychology, International Relations, and Law and Society at Narragansett High School. She also serves as the advisor to the school’s Model United Nations club, where she mentors students as they explore global issues and practice diplomacy, collaboration, and thoughtful dialogue.

In her nomination, Narragansett High School student Teagan Ralph highlighted the impact Jones has on her students, noting that Jones helps make global issues feel personal and meaningful while encouraging students to understand different perspectives and thoughtfully engage with complex challenges.

Prior to becoming a teacher, Jones worked with a youth-led democracy organization in Beirut, Lebanon and completed graduate research on civic education in divided societies. Her teaching experience also includes work in schools in Beirut, Lebanon; McLean, Virginia; Providence, Rhode Island; and now Narragansett.

Reflecting on the recognition, Jones shared that one of the most rewarding parts of teaching civics is seeing students recognize their voice and role in society.

“My favorite part of teaching is observing students think critically about the world around them and watching them recognize their power and agency within their school, community, state, and country,” Jones said.

The Narragansett School System congratulates Ms. Jones on this well-deserved recognition and thanks her for the meaningful impact she continues to make on her students and the school community.
