The Narragansett School System is proud to offer high school students in district and across Rhode Island the opportunity to take part in one of our CTE (Career and Technical Education) Programs, which hosts many advanced and extensive courses.
Curriculum is designed for students preparing for careers and college, giving them the chance to obtain hands-on experience while learning trades and specialties. We are one of more than 54 high schools in the network, all working together to prepare students early on for a successful career. We work directly with the Rhode Island Department of Education, Future Farmers of America, and educational collaborators such as the University of Rhode Island to create coursework and standards.
Our Program is unique as students enrolled in the CTE program remain full-time members of the high school. Students also have the opportunity to access advanced placement and additional college credit classes while still earning certificates in career-ready fields.
Narragansett High School CTE Programs
Educator Preparation
Our Educator Preparation CTE will give students who are considering a career as an educator the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in PK-12 classrooms, delve into core areas of study such as English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, and work with students and teachers across the Narragansett School System. Students will participate in coursework aligned with the nationally accredited curriculum Educators Rising and complete credentials in current educational topics such as Anti-Bias Instruction, Formative Assessment, Classroom Culture, Student Engagement, and Collaboration. Students will also have the opportunity to take key assessments needed for teaching such as ETS ParaPro Assessment and Praxis Core Assessment. This program expansion was made possible through the support of the University of Rhode Island School of Education.
Mechanical Trades in Plumbing
Mechanical Trades- Plumbing, provides students hands-on training and apprenticeship opportunities with our industry partner, Rhode Island's UA Local 51. Students will take courses focused on plumbing with a chance to also explore construction management, pipe fitting, and welding. These programs are all built to enrich student experience and create lifelong skills. Upon completion of the program, students will be certified to begin their apprenticeship as a full member of RI UA Local 51.
Agricultural Science
Our Agricultural Science Program offers extensive coursework in Mechanical Fabrication, Tool Handling, Animal and Plant Husbandry, and an overall understanding of Animal and Agricultural Science. In addition to this wide range of focused curriculum and training, students continue to play a lead role in the annual Rhode Island Home Show as well as having the opportunity to become active members of our award winning Narragansett FFA (Future Farmers of America) Team. Students help facilitate the school's annual Mariner Marketplace, where they grow and sell plants and other farm fresh options for the season as well as fresh maple syrup hand crafted by students in the Sugar Shack. We are also pleased to host many of our classes in our state-of-the-art greenhouse from Holland.
Information and Computer Technology
Students have access to state-of-the-art equipment and programming to further their passion for technology. Through this program, where studies can begin as early as elementary school thanks to a state grant, students dive into curriculum such as coding, cyber security, virtual reality animation, video game development, web design, programming, computer networking, and computer hardware. Students can earn valuable industry certificates and credentials. Narragansett High School is one of only a few in the state to partner with worldwide IT and Networking leader, CISCO, to offer students the chance to earn CCRI credits and partners with URI to provide students the opportunity to earn college credits.
