SPORTS MEDICINE AND ATHLETIC TRAINING
Students enrolled in the Sports Medicine and Athletic Training CTE program will participate in a comprehensive experience through which they learn about different career paths in the growing field of sports medicine, while developing a fundamental understanding of the content knowledge, skills, and practices that are essential for occupations in this area. Topics of study include anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, injuries and illnesses, appropriate use of technology and equipment, basic assessment, treatment, and management of athletic injuries, engaging with patients and their families, and important ethical and legal responsibilities of medical professionals. Students learn through active, hands-on courses and work-based learning opportunities — including job shadowing and internships — with professionals in the sports medicine field. Moreover, students who complete this program can earn valuable credentials and certifications that will benefit them if they choose a career in sports medicine and athletic training.
Any student eligible to attend Narragansett High School is automatically eligible for enrollment in the Sports Medicine and Athletic Training program. To successfully complete this program, students must take the required coursework listed below:

SPORTS MEDICINE CAREERS AND HEALTHCARE PRACTICES

This course is an elective for all students and is the first required course for students enrolled in the Sports Medicine and Athletic Training CTE program. Students will explore the different careers in sports medicine, and develop a basic understanding of the health care-related knowledge and skills that are essential for a career in sports medicine. Students will also learn about promoting health and well-being, health literacy, healthcare delivery systems, medical terminology, basic patient care, and the ethical and legal responsibilities of medical care providers.
